The Parliamentary Affairs Minister says John Mahama’s running mate, Prof Naana Opoku-Agyemang lacks what it takes to complement her boss for the 2020 elections.
Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu said although the newly elected running mate is poised, balanced, and very calm, she does not have qualities in governance to affect any change in the country.
“Don’t forget that ticket (Vice President position) is supposed to play the role of a generalist, to exhibit versatility in such a manner that when it comes to legal matters and economic matters they have some control.”
“But, here is the case, former President Mahama is a communicator so he should be looking for someone who is a law-maker or a lawyer who will add values to the governance architecture,” he stated.
According to the Majority Leader, he expected the ex-president to nominate personalities such as a former Finance Minister, Dr Kwabena Duffuor or a former Director-General of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Dr Nii Moi Thompson with an economic background as preferable pair to impact positively on the economy.
Following her selection as running mate, there’s a seeming division among the Ghanaian electorates over the former President’s choice, he said.
Regarding gender equality in the country, Mr Mensah Bonsu said if Mahama really wanted a woman as his running mate the likes of a former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hanna Tetteh, a former AG, Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong or Betty Mould-Iddrisu have demonstrable competence and have the needed qualities to partner him.
"These people have strong experience in governance that can compliment the Mahama," he said.
