The Controller and Accountant General’s Department must act as a matter of urgency to resolve a feud that is gradually building between two teacher unions: Ghana National Association of Teachers and the National Association of Graduate Teachers. NAGRAT is complaining over 400 of its members had deductions made from their salaries and paid to members of GNAT. President of NAGRAT Kwame Alovi said the association took steps to rectify the anomaly but was asked to remain tight-lipped because “somebody may lose his job” if he went public with the matter. But the NAGRAT president says he suspects strongly that a GNAT official is behind the situation. “There is somebody there I don’t know whose interest he is fighting for. If GNAT had not told them to do those things I don’t know why they should be sending our members off NAGRAT and putting them on the deduction list of GNAT,” Mr Alovi said. Mr Alovi said the Controller and Accountant General must act fast to arrest the confusion because more of his colleagues are being deducted. “We want to get to the controller and find out who is doing that and the reasons behind those actions. [If] GNAT gave the instruction and they are denying or not we want to get to the bottom,” he said. But officials of GNAT have denied complicity in the anomaly. Describing the anomaly as a "genuine concern" the General Secretary of GNAT Mrs Irene Duncan Adanuso said her outfit has nothing to do with the deductions. Asked what they have done about it, she said they have demanded for explanations from the Controller and Accountant General's Department adding they are ready to refund the said amounts.
