Managing Editor of the Daily Dispatch Newspaper, Ben Ephson says Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo may get more votes than ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor did at the NPP Delegates’ Congress but he cannot become president because he will lose floating votes in the national elections.

“Let me be honest with you - if Nana and Kufuor contests in the NPP Nana will beat Kufuor but whether Akufo-Addo is popular among floating voters like Kufuor [was], no because Kufuor appeals to more floating voters than Akufo-Addo” Ben Ephson stated.  

Pollster Ben Ephson was speaking with Captain Smart Thursday’s on Adom FM’s “Dwaso Nsem”.

He believes ex-President Kufuor is influential but Nana Addo is more popular within the NPP, but he does not appeal to floating voters like ex-President Kufuor did.

“This is the problem - in the NPP if a presidential candidate is being elected without any factions and divisions, all party members will be onboard to support him or her. But the problem with Nana had been, will he appeal to floating voters” Ephson asked.

Nana Akufo-Addo has ran for president twice (2008 and 2012) on the ticket of the NPP and lost on both occasions. Kufuor lost once (1996) to former President Jerry John Rawlings, and won twice (2000 and 2004) against late President John Evans Atta Mills.

After Nana Addo’s loss in 2012 he sought to use the Supreme Court to get the presidency but lost on that occasion too. He then announced to party members at his Nima residence he was taking a break.

Nana Addo promised to announce his decision on whether to run again for the party’s presidential slot after his break. He had since given hints of his intentions to run again but he is yet to make a formal declaration on that.

He has been on holidays outside of Ghana and recently he postponed his return to the country to January 27, 2014, when the NPP internal primaries whould be over. Pundits say the postponement was carefully calculated for him to avoid the temptation of lending his support to any candidate.

Meanwhile, the party is preparing to go to the polls on Saturday, January 25, 2014.
