Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has cast doubt on the use of resources by the National Cathedral Secretariat meant for the construction of the Cathedral.
According to the MP, recent poor financial decisions by the Secretariat raise concern about the stipulated 2024 deadline for the completion of the project.
He revealed the Secretariat after raising GHS794,990.01 from a fundraising event in the United States of America “then decided to host 2 Bible Museum of Africa symposia at Kempinski in Accra which cost them GHS790,845.27.”
“In simpler terms, the Secretariat’s Kempinski expenditure is virtually everything raised from its US fundraiser, leaving only a measly GHS4,144.74 for actual construction,” he posted on Twitter.
Can we trust the National Cathedral Secretariat to use private donations to complete Prez Akufo-Addo’s Cathedral by 2024 when this Secretariat raised GHS794,990.01 from its US fundraiser only to spend GHS790,845.27 at Kempinski leaving a measly GHS4,144 for actual construction? pic.twitter.com/YUDMNT5EPF

Construction of the National Cathedral has stalled since March 2022 after contractors, JV contractors and RIBADE Ltd abandoned site over lack of payment.
Attempts to raise funds from the public purse to support the construction of the Cathedral also hit the rocks after the Minority in Parliament vehemently opposed the GH₵80million budgetary allocation in the 2023 budget.
Meanwhile, the Secretariat has remained unperturbed about the many snags the construction has hit and has since upped their fundraising activities.
The President, Akufo-Addo, recently supported the construction with a GH₵100,000 donation.
