The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharabutu has hailed last Tuesday's historic meeting between President John Evans Atta Mills and former President John Agyekum Kufuor, saying they have shown the way forward.
In a statement issued in Accra on Friday, he said Islam considered a meeting of two heads of opposing political or religious organisations with good intent as "a fundamental tool of fostering unity and prosperity in the country".
He said Prophet Mohammed used this tool to bring peace and unity with his counterparts of opposing religious beliefs when he arrived in Madina.
"This is the more reason why Muslims believe in dialogue, mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence with a neighbour, even if he is an enemy."
Sheikh Sharabutu urged political parties to demonstrate the sense of unity and mutual understanding with whoever is given the mantle by Allah to rule the country.
"We congratulate the two leaders for showing the way forward by working hand-in-hand on issues that unite us and we say Ayekoo!" the Chief Imam said.
There are no details of discussions at last Tuesday's meeting between the two leaders, which was at the instance of President Mills.
The President said the meeting discussed issues of national and international concerns.
