The National Forestry Forum is disappointed at the lack of political will to stop the massive degradation of the country’s forest by illegal mining operations.
The forum says thousands of hectares of forest have been lost to illegal miners and the situation is deteriorating.
What is more appalling, according to Chairman of the Forum, is that huge trenches and pits are left behind which then collects water and breeds mosquitoes and sometimes drown innocent citizens.
Kwame Asamoah Dwomoh told Luv News the situation will lead to the depletion of majority of Ghana’s forest in few years.
According to him, many water bodies which serve a large number of communities have also been heavily polluted by illegal mining activities posing health risks to users.
Mr. Dwomoh is surprised government is not showing any serious effort to reverse the trend.
He is especially worried none of the Presidential candidates for Election 2012 have raised any issue about the rampant degradation of the forests by the miners even as they tour the affected area.
