The National Sports Authority has revealed plans of refurbishing the four most prestigious stadiums in the country.
The football pitches are set to undergo intensive renovation in order to improve the level of play in the Ghana Premier League.
According to the Public Relations Officer of National Sports Authority, Issaka Hamid, the exercise – which has already started is aimed at improving the standards of the pitch for quality delivery.
“We are putting measures in place to modernize the pitches on our stadia. Our main problem is water and the dry season is also setting in. We will provide ten tankers of water a day and shower the pitches twice daily.” Hamid said on Asempa FM’s Sports Night.
“The sports Council have monitored the situation and contacted the Ghana Water Company because we lack water to shower the pitches.”
“We are planning to drill bore-holes at the stadiums, especially behind the two goal posts. This will serve as a source of irrigation."
“The Sports Council has also planned to revisit the old methods of getting the pitches in good shape by contacting the Ghana Fire Service and the Zoom Lion so they can provide us with adequate water.”
The last time major renovation work was done on the Accra and Kumasi Sports stadiums was when Ghana hosted the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations and nothing has been done since.
The deterioration state of the facilities has led to uncomfortable circumstances in the past few years.
This will be the first major rehabilitation of the pitch since it was reconstructed for the Ghana 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.
Last month, the Minister of Youth and Sports inspected the Essipong stadium at Sekondi-Takoradi in the Western Region disclosed that Government had sunk a lot of money into the building of all the Stadia across the country and therefore it would not abandon them.
