Head of Policy Monitoring and Evaluation at the presidency, Dr. Tony Aidoo, says the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has the greatest responsibility to be dedicated to the fight against corruption.

According to him, as a party founded on the principles of probity and accountability, “we must have a higher level of consciousness and be more determined towards the fight against corruption”.

Dr. Tony Aidoo was commenting on President John Mahama’s pledge to stem out corruption in his tenure in office.

The president in the wake of alleged corrupt practices in government said he will make corruption unenviable option for his appointees.

“I believe that mere rhetoric and pledge to fight against corruption will not do. The resolve must be find expression in concrete action” he added.

The NDC stalwart noted that with probity and accountability being part of the cardinal values of the party which were given expression in constitution, it places a responsibility on every person who claims to be a member of the NDC to hold on to those principles.

 “I believe that so far as Ghana is concerned, of all the political parties vying for power, the NDC has the greatest responsibility to be conscious and dedicated to the fight against corruption not only because it is social democratic party [but] it has historical and contemporary reasons like June 4, and the PNDC regime stood for probity, accountability and transparency.”

He indicated that the achievements of June 4th and PNDC in the fight against corruption guided by probity and  accountably are indelible facts as evidenced in the preamble of the 1992 constitution.

This, Dr. Aidoo says, puts every NDC member in an uncompromising position when it comes to the fight against corruption.

Tony Aidoo commended President Mahama for the steps taken so far but thinks “every allegation of corruption must be met with the swiftest of action so that your intention in the fight against corruption is not misconstrued as mere rhetoric and window dressing”.
