An aide to the flag bearer of the opposition NPP has condemned the ruling party over the unnecessary disruption of a scheduled meeting by former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings in the Central region.
Abu Jinpor said attempts by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to denigrate and frustrate Nana Konadu and her supporters is rather inuring to her benefit.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings who pulled 3.1% at the recently held flagbearership elections of the NDC was in the Central region on Saturday, September 17, 2011 as part of her nationwide ‘Thank You’ tour to show appreciation for their support during the party’s Congress in Sunyani.
She was prevented from addressing party members at the Cape Coast Town Hall by a group of ‘macho men’ who forcibly locked up the Town Hall on the basis that the NDC constituency office had not been informed about the meeting.
Mrs Rawlings left with no other option addressed her supporters in front of the Cape Coast Town Hall, venue for the meeting.
However, the Friends of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings (FONKAR) has accused the Central Regional Minister Ama Benyiwaa Doe and NDC Communications Director of the region Bernard Allotey Jacobs of orchestrating the act.
According to FONKAR, they had informed executives of the region in writing prior to Mrs Rawlings’ visit and were therefore completely stunned when some 30 able-bodied men disrupted the meeting.
But Ama Benyiwaa Doe and Allotey Jacobs have both vehemently denied the accusations leveled against them.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Abu Jinapor said instead of government focusing on educating the public on their Better Ghana Agenda, they have rather concentrated on how to bring down the Rawlingses.
He noted that the action by the Central regional executives of the NDC corroborates claims that some government officials have made it an agenda to malign the former first family just to win favour from the presidency.
Abu Jinapor stressed that "Nana Konadu has the fundamental human right enshrined in chapter five of our constitution to assemble people and express free speech".
He called on President J.E.A. Mills to reprimand the people behind the shameful act against Mrs. Rawlings.
Meanwhile, a member of the NDC Communications team, Fred Agbenyo also a panelist on the programme, sought to justify the actions of the party executives in the Central region.
He said Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings being a former first Vice Chairperson of the party “should have known better”.
