The Minority’s Spokesperson on Communication, A.B.A Fuseini is predicting chaos at registration centres if the Electoral Commission enforces a yet-to-be approved Legislative Instrument (LI).
The L.I. when passed will require people seeking to get on the new register to produce either a passport or national identification card.
Birth certificates and current voter’s ID cards will not be accepted.
But the Sagnerigu MP says voters will not accept those requirements which will result in confusion at the registration centres.
“I can tell you without any iota of doubt that there will be chaos in the registration process. I cannot see my constituents lining up to register and you tell them that they have no Ghana card and passport so they cannot register.
“It is a recipe for chaos that is why we are saying they should abandon this exercise…it is needless, full of confusion and a waste of the tax payers money and will not contribute to our democracy,” he told JoyNews’ Joseph Opoku Gakpo in an interview.
He wants the LI withdrawn.
The MP said he 1992 Constitution specifies how prospective voters can get registered; be a Ghanaian, 18 years of age and of sound mind.
Mr Fuseini wonders why the EC is seeking to set that provision aside and introduce a new one.
“No one has any right to make a subsidiary legislation whether it is an act of Parliament or anything to take away rights conferred by the Constitution
“We all agree that the constitution is the fundamental law of the land and any other law that is inconsistent with the constitution is null and void. So why would you insist that if you don’t have the Ghana card or a passport you cannot vote,” he queried.
The EC is preparing to compile a new electoral roll for the December 2020 polls and has drummed home the need for this to be done.
The Commission insists the current register is bloated and not fit for purpose.
Mr Fuseini like his colleague Minority MPs disagrees with this assertion.
He told Joseph, “that register is more credible than the EC itself; Jean Mensa, Bossman and all those other people running the EC today.”
