Mr George Lawson, Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has made a passionate appeal to the security agencies, especially the police to fair in their dealings. He said the security agencies were in the country to protect people against “bad citizens”, therefore in the process of discharging their duties they should remain neutral. Mr Lawson was speaking to newsmen after he led a party delegation to visit some persons who were assaulted at Kyebi over the weekend. He described the incident as unfortunate, saying that the culprits should be dealt with according to the laws of the country. Mr Lawson observed that election was not a “do or die” affair but a platform for everyone to express themselves on issues. He noted that the NDC would continue to “preach” peace and stay committed to it and therefore called on all supporters to stay calm and not to retaliate to any form of violence but rather report to the police. When newsmen spoke to one of the victims, who gave his name as Kwame Ahmed, 35, he alleged that at about 20.00 hours on Saturday, he went to eat at a “chop bar” and met one Kwaku Duodu, a supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He said without any provocation, Duodu first attacked him verbally and later poured soup on his face, where the caretaker of the “chop bar” later helped him to wash off the soup. Kwame said on his way out of the place, Duodu followed him and later slashed him with a cutlass on the head. Another victim, Abdul Wahab, 25, who had been treated and discharged, also said that at about 1400 hours on Saturday, he and one of the party drivers went out to buy food. He said upon reaching the Kyebi Township, when the driver got down, a group of people numbering about 10 attacked him with cutlasses. Mr Wahab said he later went to the police to report the case but no member of the group had been arrested as at now. He identified three members of the group who assaulted him as one Julius, Appea Adjei and Kwame. Mr Lawson was accompanied by the Eastern Regional vice chairman of the NDC, Alhaji Sumaila and Mr Anthony Gyampo, the Secretary.
