New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Asokwa constituency has scoffed at what he says is the vicious attempt by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to discredit the free Senior High School (SHS) policy. Maxwell Kofi Jumah said NDC’s massive campaign against the free secondary education policy amounts to digging its own grave into opposition. He was commenting on the fracas between the ruling party and the General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Pastor Mensa Otabil over the use of his sermons for partisan politics. Pastor Otabil reacted harshly to what he says is an attempt to tarnish his reputation by appendages of the NDC who have pieced together comments he made in the past to create an impression that he is against the proposed free SHS policy of the NPP. The ICGC leader described the act as “Machiavellian, criminal and unethical” and appealed to President Mahama to call his people to order. But the preacher man’s appeal to the president did not go down well with members of the NDC who argued that his [Otabil] sermons are in the public domain and the President cannot be held liable for the actions of private individuals. However, on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday, Kofi Jumah minced no words describing the conduct of the NDC as “an act of desperation to retain power”. He said the manipulation of the preacher man’s sermon by appendages of the ruling party is an attestation that the NDC has been badly hit by the policy. The Asokwa MP indicated that for a party that thrives on propaganda and lies, the NDC he claimed wanted to use Pastor Otabil’s sermons to corroborate the erroneous impression that the free SHS is not feasible. He noted that the momentum of the Nana Akufo-Addo led free SHS policy has sank deep into the minds of Ghanaians who have promised to give the NPP a resounding victory in December. The NPP man averred that the NDC’s campaign has been deflated and thus has resorted to buying votes to avoid defeat. Kofi Jumah urged Ghanaians to put the future of their children first and vote out what he called a corrupt-ridden Mahama-led administration.
