The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress Johnson Asiedu Nketia says the party is yet to be officially informed about the return of ex-president Jerry John Rawlings to the NDC campaign trail. He was reacting to media reports that the ex-president is ready to join the party’s campaign to retain power in the December elections. After months of criticisms of the ruling party and a clear admission during a meeting with the NPP flagbearer that he would not be active on the campaign trail in this year’s elections, the ex-president said he will be back campaigning for the ruling party. His aide Kofi Adams confirmed this, saying the decision was taken after a meeting with former National Executive Members of the party. But in a reaction, the General Secretary of the party Johnson Asiedu Nketia told Joy FM’s Beatrice Adu they are yet to be officially informed as a party. He did not say however if the party would give him a frontline role like it did in the 2008 elections. Meanwhile, the party has given a seven day ultimatum to its defected members and others who have gone independent to return or eternally lose their membership of the party. The General Secretary of the party Johnson Asiedu Nketia disclosed this shortly after a National Executive Council meeting. The party is faced with the prospects of losing some of its Parliamentary seats due to threats by aggrieved party members who have gone independent. The KEEA constituency as well as the Lower Manya constituency is a clear example of factions in the ruling party culminating in some losing aspirants in the primaries filing to contest as independent candidates. Others too have defected to the breakaway National Democratic Party. Johnson Asiedu Nketia says those members must rescind their decision and return to the party in seven days or forever lose its membership of the party.
