The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Upper Manya constituency office at Asesewa in the Eastern Region was vandalized by some angry youths in the constituency on Thursday 12th May 2011 at about 4:30pm.
The constituency office which has just seen its first renovation since 1991 awaiting handing over, was said to have been destroyed by the youth instructed by unknown persons.
According to the constituency secretary Mr. Frederic Keni Abaitey, items destroyed include; a split air conditioner, table top fridge, chairs and fan.
According to the constituency secretary, the youths acted without any provocation to merit their action.
He explained that they (the constituency executives) got the hint that some sections of the youth are not happy because they have allowed one Mr. Jeff Kavienu, who has shown interest to contest the sitting Member of Parliament for the area, to renovate the constituency office without consulting the MP Stephen Amoanor Kwao, who is also a minister of state at the office of the president.
Shocked by the action, the constituency chairman Rev. H. K. Sackitey lamented that the constituency office since its creation in 1991 has never seen a face lift until Mr. Jeff Kavienu, who is based in Koforidua volunteered to renovate the office with new roofing sheets, floor tiles, and communication gadgets, DSTV, fridge, plastic chairs and air conditioner.
Rev. H.K Sackitey said the frontage of the NDC office has become the rallying point for the youth and other persons in Asesewa every evening to watch live sports and other international events on DStv, which according to him is a plus for the NDC in the constituency to win the hearts of the youth.
He said, the Upper Manya constituency executives have reported the incident to the Asesewa police, adding that the perpetrators would be prosecuted.
However, Mr Stephen Amoanor Kwao, the Member of Parliament for the area who has been accused of supporting the youth’s action has denied knowledge of the act.
