National Organiser of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has labeled as a scam the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) promise to absorb the fees for all fresh tertiary students.

According to Sammi Awuku, the NDC lacks policy credibility and is only making the promise as a last-minute effort to deceive the electorates.

The NDC, in a December 1 press release, had indicated that the next Mahama-led administration will pay the full school fees of all Ghanaian students who will be admitted to tertiary institutions during the 2020/21 academic year.

The party explained; “this policy is an enhancement of our commitment in the People’s Manifesto to absorb 50% of the school fees of all tertiary students for the 2020/21 academic year through the 'Kyemupe' policy, which will now apply to only continuing students in tertiary institutions in the country.”

But the NPP's Organiser wants the promise to be taken with a pinch of salt describing it as "the biggest scam that anybody can perpetuate on the people of Ghana."

"The NDC cancelled the nursing training and teacher allowances in the run up to 2016 elections... he said the reason why he was cancelling it was that the economy couldn't sustain the payment of these allowances."

"Teacher and nursing trainee students are less than 200,000, Now you want to pay tuition fees for all first-year students of universities across the country in excess of 400,000 people," he said Tuesday.

He further explained that the doubt cast by former President Mahama on the feasibility of the Free SHS programme put his credibility in doubt with regards to his latest promise.

"Mr Mahama himself said it [Free SHS] wasn't possible. Nana Akufo-Addo proved to him one year that it was possible. In 12 months we proved to him that we can still restore teacher training allowances and still sustain the running of our economy," he told JoyNews on the sidelines while on monitoring duties of the ongoing special voting exercise.

Meanwhile, Sammi Awuku expressed confidence that his party's candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, Lydia Seyram Alhassan will win the race to parliament and also secure a second term for President Akufo-Addo.
