An accused person, Yaw Osafo Djan, who is standing trial at an Accra Regional Tribunal for narcotic offences, on Wednesday accused Ben Ndego, formerly of the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB), of allowing his supplier to escape arrest. The accused person, in an application for bail, told the court that a parcel he had sent to the post office which allegedly contained Cannabis Sativa, a narcotic drug, was given to him by a certain man. Yaw who said he was not aware that the parcel contained narcotic drug, is facing two counts of attempted exportation and possession of narcotic drug. The accused, a freelance journalist and a resident of Maamobi, told the court that when he was arrested, he led a team of investigators whose leader was Ndego to the house of the man who gave him the substance for posting. He noted that before they went to the man's house, he had informed the investigators that when they entered the house and found the man's car parked outside, it meant he was around. When they got to the man's Dansoman residence, they noticed that his car was parked in his house so he stood at a distance for the police to enter. Yaw stated that on the orders of Ndego, the team went back to the police station without arresting the man, and the explanation they gave was that they would go later to arrest him. He said the police had since not made any attempt to arrest the suspect. This allegation prompted the court to invite the investigator in the case, Detective Inspector Stephen Baidoo for confirmation. Detective Inspector Baidoo confirmed the allegation but said he could not explain why Ndego asked them to leave without arresting the suspect that day and why they had since not visited the house. The court, based on this confirmation, granted the accused person, who had been on remand for 17 months, a ¢50 million bail with a surety to appear on September 5, 2007. Yaw alleged that his uncle, a certain Prince, introduced him to Allan and Nikki as his friends who would be calling on him for assistance in their business. Sometime after this introduction, Allan gave the accused $300 to meet Nikki at the Gulf House for a parcel containing ceramics which was to be posted to someone. Yaw then went to meet Nikki for the parcel which he posted at the Cantonments Post Office through an EMS. After that incident, accused claimed he had been sent on four more occasions to post other packages containing different post offices in Accra and Koforidua. In 2006, accused went to Koforidua to post ceramics but the parcel was intercepted at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) on suspicion that it contained wee and artifacts. Yaw was subsequently arrested by the post office security officers and escorted to KIA, Aviance, and the Cargo section of CEPS where he identified the parcel as the one he had posted at Koforidua on February 13, 2006.
