The third edition of the Vodafone World of Difference project has been launched in Accra with an inspiring story of a newly wedded couple spending part of their honeymoon with orphans.
Martin Djakuma, an engineer with Vodafone and his new wife Dorcas, spent the latter part of their honeymoon at the Save Our Life Orphanage in Ahia Nkwanta in the Ashanti Region, December last year.
He was one of 45 volunteers who participated in the second edition of the Vodafone World of Difference and shared his fascinating story about how he had to take his new wife along to Kumasi to get closer to the orphans.
Martin told press men and members of the Vodafone Ghana Foundation during the launch of the third edition that his time with the orphans was life changing.
He told Myjoyonline.com, he was distressed by the news of a fire that gutted the orphanage late last year and vowed to make a difference in the lives of the young orphans.
Not even his upcoming wedding could quench his desire to assist the orphans and with the support of Vodafone as well as the understanding of his wife, he had the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of these orphans by staying with them for a period of two months.
During that period, Martin took the children through IT training and offering other social and financial support for the orphans.
He donated his allowance meant for logistics to rebuilding part of the orphanage consumed by fire.
Martin’s story is one of many exciting stories about professionals volunteering their time, expertise and sometimes resources to reach out to the underprivileged in the society in the Vodafone World of Difference project.
Manager of the Vodafone Ghana Foundation Afua Sarkodie told Myjoyonline.com the project is to “give professionals the opportunity to use their talents to affect lives of people.”
She said the two previous editions have been successful which has necessitated the number of participants to be increased to 50, from 35 and 45 respectively.
Explaining the criteria for selection, Sarkodie said all interested professionals who are 18 years and above must apply to the foundation with a compelling story and a plan of action.
She said the participants must have a skill or talent and be willing to donate that talent full time for a period of two months.
She said a crack panel, including Joy FM’s Dzifa Bampoh, Audrey Gadzekpo will vet the applications and select 50 participants for this year’s project.
Efua Sarkodie noted the participants cannot change the world overnight but in their own small way, they will give a helping hand to a crawling child who needs it.
