The Food and Drug Authority (FDA) has cautioned citizens against stocking or self-prescribing the newly found drug that reduces the death rate of a Covid-19 patient, dexamethasone.
Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Delese Darko in a statement on Thursday said the drug is a corticosteroid and can have serious side effects.
Thus, it is important that the drug is prescribed and administered by a licensed medical practitioner, she said.

“Dexamethasone should, therefore, not under any circumstance be used for the prevention of Covid-19 as its potential to suppress the immune system will counteract the body’s natural function to fight against Covid-19 and other infections in long term use,” she stressed.
Mrs Darko then advised Ghanaians to continue to practice the safety precautions outlined by the Health Ministry to prevent contracting the virus.
Two days ago, UK experts revealed that a cheap and widely available drug can help save the lives of patients seriously ill with coronavirus.
According to them, a low-dose steroid treatment dexamethasone is a major breakthrough in the fight against the deadly virus.
