The Old Achimotan Association 1966/67 Year Group has celebrated their 50th Year of entry into Achimota School.

As their contribution, the group will be constructing a 2000-seater dinning hall for the school.

Former president Jerry John Rawlings and his wife Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings took to the dance floor on Saturday at the Achimotan 1966/67 Year Group 50th Anniversary celebrations in Accra.

The former first family who are members of the year group showed off some impressive Agbadza skills during the celebrations.

The year group which includes Ghana’s ex-president Jerry Rawlings and first lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings said the gesture is in appreciation to the school for nurturing a class of eager fresh-faced young boys and girls.

The anniversary coincided with Achimota School’s 89^th Founder's Day celebration sponsored by Huawei, the leading global information and communications technology solutions provider.

The anniversary was on the theme: Championing Education which is Nationalistic in Orientation.

Speaking at the event, President of the 1966-67 Year Group, Samuel Appiah-Ampofo stressed the need for the country to adopt models of education which impart strong leadership skills, and places emphasis on discipline.

Mr. Appiah-Ampofo bemoaned the falling standards of Ghana’s education system which hitherto attracted students from the African sub-region.

“If the education becomes just book learning then the orientation of succeeding generations will not be nationalistic but selfish and individualistic” he stated.

Mr. Appiah-Ampofo urged government to take the necessary steps to ensure Ghana’s education system meets up to international standards.

For her part, Headmistress of the School, Mrs. Beatrice Adom said the founder's celebration is to show the students what their forebears did to establish the school.

She noted the founders did not only establish high educational institutions but also built important structures like the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and the Takoradi Harbour that provide great services to the nation.

However, these people whose efforts permeate all facets our lives were most often forgotten, she added.

Mrs Adom urged the students not to compromise the high standards set by the founders but to work hard to improve upon it.
