The angry nationwide demonstrations by Nigerians over the removal of subsidy on petroleum products has taken an international dimension as some Nigerians resident in Ghana converged at the High Commission Friday, crying, singing and chanting over petroleum price hikes.
The group calling themselves Save Nigeria Group, Ghana, has threatened to turn the precincts of the Nigeria High Commission into their bedrooms on Monday if the federal government fails to restore the subsidy regime.
Millions have taken to the streets in Nigeria protesting the hundred per cent hikes in fuel prices following administration's decision to deregulate.
Trade unions across the country have declared a nationwide strike and have joined angry youths on the streets.
But numbering a little over ten, the Save Nigeria Group besieged the premises of the Nigeria High Commission in Accra, brandishing placards with inscriptions, “No to IMF, World Bank, and UN policies in Nigeria,” “Nigeria is not working; kill corruption not the Nigerian people,” among others lamenting what they claim are worsening living conditions in Nigeria.
Leader of the group, Comrade Ojaomo told Myjoyonline.com they will return to the Commission on Monday with their mats, cooking utensils if steps were not taken by the Nigerian government to revert to the old petroleum prices.
The Ghana government is also implementing a similar policy on subsidy which led to some 20 per cent hikes but the youth insists the two scenarios cannot be compared.
Ojaomo said whilst Ghanaians enjoy electricity, good roads, pipe borne water, adequate security, the exact opposite can be said of Nigeria.
There is “poor or non-existent electricity supply; Nigeria roads are death traps; hospitals in Nigeria are glorified mortuaries," he mocked.
