Government says it does not expect any further tension between Ghana and the Argentines over the continued detention of their naval ship at the Tema Port.
Foreign Affairs Minister, Mohammed Mumuni says the two countries have been in close contact since last weekend’s ruling by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea which ordered the unconditional release of the vessel.
The Attorney General is seeking a Supreme Court ruling to quash a High Court judgment which led to the detention of the warship since October.
That order was secured by NML Capital, a US investment firm that says Argentina owes it 370 million dollars.
But Alhaji Mumuni says the sailors may have to wait for the proper legal processes to be finalised.
“We have always been at pains to demonstrate that as far as the matter is concerned, Ghana has no [problem] with Argentina.
“It is a purely private litigation and therefore now that the UN tribunal has ruled and ordered the immediate release of the vessel we have to take that ruling in relation to our own constitutional framework," he said.
He added the Argentines are in no position to move the ship away from the shores of Ghana but stressed the port authorities in Ghana will follow due process to ensure the proper thing is done.
