As part of measures to curb the many road traffic accidents, the Northern Regional Minister is calling for spot fines for drivers who leave their broken down vehicles on the road.
Salifu Saeed says scores of lives – more than 2000 annually – have been lost in the country as a result of these faulty vehicles often parked on the road.
Speaking to JoyNews as part of the #ArriveAlive campaign, Mr. Saeed says until a drastic action is taken to serve as a deterrent, that norm of drivers abandoning their faulty vehicles on the road will not end.
Mr. Saeed says the habit of drivers leaving their vehicles on major roads because of technical faults is very rife in the Northern region.
“If they cannot move it, they should call a tow truck to tow it away,” he said.
The Minister wants the National Road Safety Authority to consider introducing “on the spot fine” to curb the menace.
