A group of supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has converged at the residence of the former President John Agyekum Kufour in a last minute attempt to prevent him from attending today’s inauguration of John Mahama.
The attempt by the supporters comes after a similar one from a pro-NPP group Young Patriots who vowed to restrain the former President from attending the inauguration owing to the petition sent by the party leadership to the Supreme Court, contesting the outcome of the 2012 polls.
According to Joy News’ George Wiafe, the supporters numbering about forty, moved from Kasoa and spent the night in front of the residence of the former President amidst chanting and singing.
George Wiafe reported, the group this morning moved to the main entrance of the house, determined not to allow any vehicle move in or out of the house.
Spokesperson for the former president, Frank Agyekum speaking to Joy News described the latest move to place the former President under house arrest as “unfortunate, sad and unnecessary”.
He stated that it is time the party leadership come out to openly rebuke actions of these nature.
Frank Agyekum said people trying to hold the former president hostage in the performance of his duties must be ashamed of themselves.
The group believes that John Kufuor's participation in today's event would not only compromise the NPP's petition sent to the Supreme Court but also defeat the NPP's resolve to boycott the inauguration.
