The opposition NPP is urging President Mills to name and shame people within his party he suspects peddle drugs.
The party says the president meant well when he admitted that his people must be checked for drugs.
But the NPP believes that is not enough. The latest diplomatic cables published by whistle-blowing website Wikileaks suggest high level complicity of government officials in the drug trade.
It also says enforcers of the drug law have been compromised. The NPP says the president should take further action.
The General Secretary of the party Kwadwo-Owusu Afriyie accused government officials of attempting to put a spin on an alleged conversation President Mills is said to have had with former US Ambassador to Ghana, Donald Teitelbaum in which the president said some of his officials have been compromised by the drug barons.
He suspects there is some truth in the conversation between President Mills and the ex-US Ambassador, adding Mills’ directive for his appointees to be searched at the VVIP lounge of the Kotoka International Airport lends credence to that conversation.
