The Northern Regional Police Command is taking steps to avoid a repeat of religious clashes that resulted in the destruction of properties following disagreements over the contents of an Islamic sermon in the month of Ramadan last year.
Regional Commander, DCOP Ken Yeboah, has cautioned media houses in the Tamale metropolis to be careful in handling the content of Islamic sermons on their networks during the Islamic month of Ramadan, due to start next week.
Joy News’ Northern Regional Correspondent, Hashmin Mohammed, said for several decades two feuding sects of Muslims in Tamale, the Tijaniyya and Al-sunnah, have clashed over interpretations of the Quran during the month of Ramadan.
The feud which usually begins in the media got very fierce last year resulting in violent physical confrontations between the two sects.
DCOP Yeboah met with management of the radio stations in Tamale Thursday July 4, to ensure they take control of preachers who come to their stations.
The Regional Commander was also assured there would be no clashes this year after he met the two factions.
