In a nail-biting and tense atmosphere, Nafana Presby Senior High School toppled Berekum SHS to end their 4-year drought of not qualifying for the national stage of the National Science and Maths Quiz.
The school, which was trailing Berekum SHS by a 4-point margin, managed to whisk away some 4 points in the fourth round to match up with their contender; ending the contest in a tie-breaker.
The first question thrown at the two schools in the tie-breaker went wrongly answered by both schools.
It took the second question on Chemistry to sever the force between the two schools.
Nafana Presby SHS was almost written off in the first round after securing only 13 points as against Berekum SHS’ 21 points.
The school grew from the ashes like a Phoenix to claim the second position with only 4 points behind Berekum SHS at the end of the second and third rounds.
The last time the school qualified for the preliminary stage of the national competition was in 2019.
The students couldn’t hide their excitement.
“I am really excited. This is the work of God. We’ve tried so many times. But finally, we see the national stage again,” Coordinator of the school told Emmanuel Bright Quaicoe.
Sadness and apprehension however filled the faces of supporters and contestants of Berekum Senior High School.

The students unhappily recounted that they least expected Nafana Presby to match them boot-for-boot.
“We were expecting stiff competition from Sacred Heart rather because we’ve met them before but it was easy. Nafana Presby winning this contest has really come as a surprise to us,” one of the supporters of the school said.
