Aggrieved beneficiaries of the National Youth Employment Programme in the Northern region say they are determined to teach the government a lesson come 2012, if issues relating to their allowances are not addressed.
Hundreds of beneficiaries of the programme Monday besieged the Tamale offices to demand their allowances. They are also kicking against the use of what has become known as the chit system to enable them collect their allowances.
The system was introduced to streamline the payment process. But the beneficiaries say the system is too complicated.
One of the aggrieved beneficiaries told Joy News that they are being frustrated by the fact that only one cashier has been allocated to serve over 15,000 personnel claiming their salary.
“So we want them to know that we are not only dying for the NDC; we will let them know that if their intention is to disturb us or to bother us with such things, we will also advise ourselves from the NDC,” he warned.
However Regional Coordinator of the programme, Adam Mohammed Amin told Joy News the chit system is not peculiar to the Northern region and rejected calls for it to be shelved.
He also noted that the programme was not created for only activists of the ruling NDC: “It is a government programme and it is meant for the people of Ghana.”
