Ghanaian comedian OB Amponsah has shared his experience backstage at Michael Blackson’s first comedy special in Accra on January 3, 2026, describing a mix of excitement, hope, and disappointment.
In a detailed Facebook post, Amponsah recounted his long-standing desire to share the stage with Blackson.
“Michael is one person I have tried to link up with in a lot of ways. He’s Hollywood big and I believe him being Ghanaian too, working together would be fun and the exposure, immense. But here’s the thing. No matter how hard I have tried so far, me and Michael haven’t shared a stage yet,” he wrote.
He explained how he had reached out to Blackson before his own comedy special, but his messages went unread. When he learned Blackson would be performing in Accra, he publicly offered to open for him.
“Fans of him saw it. A few who are close to him tried to plug me but it didn’t seem to be working out,” Amponsah said.
On the day of the show, Khemikal and Putogo had confirmed their spots to perform five-minute sets, and Amponsah prepared to enjoy the show regardless. “Ghanaian comedians are really on top of their game,” he said, praising their performances.
Blackson’s own set drew laughter from start to finish, with Amponsah noting he could not wait to watch the recording.
Amponsah then described a hopeful twist backstage, where organiser Olivia told him he might perform a five-minute set before the second show. “Anybody who saw me backstage after I received this information would testify that I was walking to and fro, mumbling to myself, rehearsing,” he wrote.
However, plans shifted unexpectedly. US-based comedian Kiara Benson took both opening slots for the evening, leaving Amponsah unable to perform despite his preparation. Efforts to resolve the situation with Olivia and the stage manager were unsuccessful. “I swallowed my disappointment, did the ‘Kevin Hart shoulder shrug’ and tapped myself on the back with the motivation that maybe it wasn’t the time yet,” he said.
Amponsah ended his post by celebrating the success of Blackson and the exposure given to Ghanaian comedians. “Congratulations to Blackson on an incredible event. Thanks for the exposure given Ghanaian comedians on his big night. Congratulations to Khemikal and Putogo for killing it on the night too,” he wrote.
He also reflected on his personal experience with humour, noting that while he had even drafted a new Facebook bio reading “Opened for Michael Blackson,” timing and circumstances did not align. “The grind is the grind! Happy New Year!”
OB Amponsah is one of the topmost Ghanaian comedians in Ghana. Currently based in trhe United States of America, he has performed on big platforms both in Ghana and abroad.
