The cost of living in this country is high [and] it would not take a President Obama or any other person to tell the Ghanaian people how the system is, Samuel Abu Jinapor, aide to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag-bearer Nana Akufo-Addo has said. He claimed the Ghana's economy has gone bankrupt in just three years of ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. Abu Jinapor was commenting on President Obama's commendation of the Mills-led administration for sustaining a good economic climate in the country. President Obama at a bilateral meeting with his Ghanaian counterpart, among other things, lauded President Mills for the prudent measures he had put in place to maintain a high growth rate, ensuring food security, root out corruption and ensuring a free and fair elections. The NDC has been quick to play up Obama's praise describing it as an endorsement and an International recognition of the hard work of the ruling government and a guarantee that President Mills would be given a second term to continue the Better Ghana Agenda. But on Asempa FM's Ekosii Sen programme Friday, Samuel Abu Jinapor said President Obama's utterances is to affirm the maturing relationship between Ghana and the United States. "It is expected, in the diplomatic circles that is what any president would say ordinarily but the reality on the ground is that the Ghanaian economy is bankrupt" he added Mr. Jinapor explained that as part of diplomacy and international relations, the US President would not openly point out the many blunders of the Mills government even if he might have some reservations about his (Mills) governance style. Despite this, Abu Jinapor said President Obama can be pardoned since he does not live in Ghana to experience the trauma Ghanaians are suffering being under an 'incompetent' Mills-led administration. The NPP youth activist stated that the NDC can tickle themselves and laugh by these comment but Abu said the fact remains that it is not a true reflection of situation on the ground. Abu Jinapor cited the rising cost of living, the crippling costs of doing business, depreciation of the cedi, unemployment among others as examples of the ruling government's mismanagement of the economy. He said the NDC has failed to deliver on the numerous campaign promises to Ghanaians hence must be shown the exit to allow an Akufo-Addo government to bring hope to Ghanaians. "The verdict is clear [that the Mills-led government] is ineffective, incompetent and one of the most corrupt government in the history of this country" Abu Jinapor said.
