The Fifty-50 Club made up of employees of AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, and the Anglogold Ashanti Malaria Control Programme, has provided financial assistance to two needy people as part of the group’s quarterly donations to the poor.
David Ababio Awuni, a 21-year-old Senior High School graduate and Monica Oware, a 50-year-old widow, went home with financial packages to support their education and livelihood, respectively, at a special event held in Obuasi.
Monica Oware, a resident of Kokoteasua in the Obuasi West Municipality and a widow, has a blurred vision caused by spinal cord and waist disorders.
She cannot fend for herself and her four kids with the meagre income from her garden eggs business.
She received a Fufu pounding machine and stuffed rented store to run commercially from the club.
The gesture enables her to stay close to her business and improve her livelihood whilst supporting her children’s education.
On his part, David Ababio Awuni received a laptop computer and financial scholarship to study Computer Science at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) for the 2021/2022 academic year.
The association also pledged to pay his school fees depending on his academic performance continuously.
Mr Awuni was full of appreciation to the association, saying payment of his fees and accommodation will give him peace of mind to study.
For Madam Monica Oware, the gesture has come at the right time.
President of Fifty-50 Club, Jacob Edmund Acquah, says the Club, which has seen its membership grow over the years, will increase support for the poor.
According to him, the Club depends on members' monthly dues to reach out to the poor and needy in Obuasi and its environs.
“This is a new Association, and we are going to do a lot more to help a lot of people. We are looking forward to selecting another group of people this December, depending on the number we will have, and support them as well,” said Mr Edmund Acquah.
