The Obuasi Municipal Assembly (OMA) is consulting a strategic investor in USA to build a citrus extracting plant in Obuasi to process oranges.
The construction of the plant would provide citrus farmers in the Municipality ready market and a guaranteed price for their produce at all times.
Mr Owusu Gyamerah, the Municipal Chief Executive, who announced this at the Municipality’s Farmers’ Day celebration at Domiabra near Obuasi, said the plant would help a situation where during bumper harvest losses.
“In this regard, we are in negotiations with AngloGold Ashanti to release some portion of their land for us to increase the production of oranges,” he said and appealed to farmers who would want to go into citrus production not to hesitate since there would be ready market.
Mr Gyamerah regretted that some farmers, who received micro-credit loans under the agricultural module of the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP), were not repaying and appealed them to settle for other to benefit.
On politics, he said the track record of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government was clear and that Ghanaians should vote for Nana Akufo-Addo to move the nation forward.
Mr Kwadwo Boamah Gyan, Municipal Director of Agriculture, said for improved agricultural yields, farmers should not hesitate to contact agricultural extension officers for expert direction and guidance.
In all, 29 farmers’ organizations and individuals, who excelled in their various fields, were honoured with certificates, agricultural inputs and bicycles.
Mr John Boadi of Kwabenakwakrom was adjudged the best farmer for the year.
