The National House of Chiefs has removed its Governance and Development Committee Chairman from office. Omanhene of the Sefwi Anhwianso Traditional Area, Ogyeahohor Yaw Gyebi II was removed from office “with immediate effect” for publicly speaking against a unanimous decision of the House. The chief had gone on air to criticise the House’s decision to advise voters to reject political party participation in local government elections. Parties are banned from the local level but a referendum which has now been called off sought to repeal that part of the constitution. The National House of Chiefs had said in a statement that they were concerned partisan politics at the local level would be accompanied with the unwholesome political culture and corruption which has done a lot of harm to the society. But Ogyeahohor Yaw Gyebi II and the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori-Panin II spoke against the House’s decision. The two chiefs claimed the leadership did not consult the House before releasing the statement announcing the decision. But the Agbogbomefia of Ho, Togbe Afede XIV, President of the House insisted in a rebuttal statement that the decision was taken through due process. It was discussed at both the committee level and the general floor of the House, the statement said. According to the National House of Chiefs, it is the second time Ogyeahohor Yaw Gyebi II had gone public to criticise a unanimous decision taken by the House. The three chiefs who spoke against the House’s decision on the aborted referendum were all absent from Thursday’s meeting in Kumasi where the decision was taken, Graphic online reported. The Naba Sigri Bewag, Sekoti Naba however, insisted they apologise for bringing the name of the House into disrepute.
