One person has been confirmed dead and at least, eight persons injured in renewed chieftaincy clashes in Bolgatanga in the Upper East region.
A man, 30, identified as Akaferey Anoman, was killed in violence that erupted between two rival chieftaincy factions Sunday.
Two rival royal gates have been at loggerheads over who should succeed the deceased paramount chief of the Bolgatanga traditional area, Naba Martin Abilba III.
Last year, the two gates clashed on several occasions, forcing the security agencies to station a team of military and police personnel in the area since September.
It is unclear what exactly instigated Sunday's clash but it is said to have started at a funeral at a Bolga suburb where the two rival gates met.
Upper East Regional Commander, DCOP Simon Yaw Afeku confirmed the incident to Joy News correspondent Albert Sore.
He said the police retrieved 19 life AA cartridges, one double edge sword in a scabbard all concealed in a black polythene bag at the funeral ground.
He said the development will not be tolerated.
“Acts of violence carried out under the guise of dispute, be it chieftaincy, land will not be tolerated and I take this opportunity to assure the people of Bolga and the good people of the region that we will do whatever we can in our capacity to bring the perpetrators of this unwanted act to books we will arrest and prosecute them.
“They can run but they cannot hide we will be going after them. We are doing all the investigations which will give us their identities, some which we already know so that they will be brought before the law."
He appealed to the general public to assist the police with the necessary information which will lead to the arrest of those who carried out the act.
He said the injured are responding to treatment at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital.
Joy News has learnt that a Regional security meeting chaired by the regional minister, Albert Abongo is underway to douse the flames before they escalate.
