Just TEN players showed up for Ghana’s first training at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday morning ahead of next month’s crucial 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Sudan and Lesotho. The session under the direction of coach Kwesi Appiah was to give the players their necessary preparation with the non-residential camping. But with several players in action for their clubs over the weekend and some expected to play on Wednesday releasing the players for international duty before the specified FIFA timescales for the release of players will be a challenge. But captain Asamoah Gyan led by example by boycotting an end of season awards ceremony in UAE to catch a plane to be able to honour head coach’s Kwesi Appiah’s call. The Al Ain striker was joined by Kwadwo Asamaoh, Christian Atsu and Maritzburg defender Awal Mohammed. Youngsters Richmond Boakye-Yiadom, Baba Rahman and Isaac Cofie took part in the session which lasted for close to two hours. They were joined by the three locally-based goalkeepers Fatau Dauda, Daniel Agyei and Stephen Adams. But the two home-based outfield players Rashid Sumaila and Mahatma Otoo were absent as their clubs Kotoko and Hearts respectively have called them up for their midweek matches. Italy-based midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang Badu sought permission from the coach to visit his family in the Brong Ahafo Region. He is expected to join camp on Tuesday while those based in France are expected for Tuesday’s training session as they will arrive in the country on Monday. According to FIFA rules clubs must release players seven days before qualifiers which counts in favour of the clubs for the release of the Ghanaians. The total number of players who trained fell short of expectations with many of the European leagues ended. Training continues tomorrow (Tuesday) hopefully with an improved size before the team’s departure to Ethiopia on Wednesday for camping.
