The souls of the righteous are in the hands of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish, they seem to have died and their departure was thought to be a disaster and their going away from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace and their hope is full of immortality. (Wisdom of Solomon 3:1-4) The late Opanin Emmanuel Ohene Assifo was born on the 1st March 1924 at Kentenkren in the Okere District of Akuapem in the Eastern Region of Ghana to Opanin Kwasi Assifo from the Royal Alabiri Clan of Abiri and Madam Adwoa Addobea also of the Asakyiri Clan of Aburi in the Akuapem South District, both of blessed memory. During his youthful age, Opanin Ohene Assifo stayed with his uncle Kofi Owusu (also of blessed memory) as a carpenter apprentice at Okonam near Suhum. At the age of 13 years, Opanin Emmanuel Kwame Ohene Assifo started his Primary education at the then Abiriw National School which was housed in the Abiriw Palace building. From there he continued to the Presbyterian Primary School and got baptised on the 26th December 1939 by Rev. H.J. Keteku. In 1942, Ohene Assifo left Abiriw Presby to continue his education at Jumapo Methodist School in the New Juaben District in the Eastern Region. However, due to financial constraints, young Ohene Assifo again left Jumapo for the Afram Plains to help his father in farming activities for two years to raise funds to continue his schooling. Some of these and many more mischances disturbed young Assifo’s education but with determination and perseverance, he finally completed standard seven in the year 1949 to continue his education. In 1950, he was employed by the Ministry of Agriculture and was sent to Agriculture Training School at Bunsu where he passed out as a Field Assistant (Cocoa Division) and was posted to New Tafo. Six years later, he was transferred to Asamankese but again he resigned this position as a Field Assistant to work with Ghana Farmers Council as a Produce Buyer. His new employment took him to Kwahu Tafo and Donkorkrom in the Afram Plains. He later resigned and went to join the then Ghana National Trading Company as Accounts Clerk. From there, he again left to work for the Ghana Film Industry. At the Film Industry, Opanin Ohene Assifo was in charge of all shipping duties of the Corporation stores as well as purchases. In 1976, Ohene Assifo voluntarily resigned and pledged not to work for any institution again but stick to self-employment. With such ambition characterised with the rich experience, he acquired from the Agriculture Training School in Bunsu in 1950. Opanin Emmanuel Kwame Ohene Assifo started Cocoa Farming at Asikasu in Akyem Abuakwa in the Eastern Region. Later on, he handed the farm to a care-taker (carpenter) and came to settle at his home town, Abiriw in the Okere District in Akuapem where he has been till his demise on that faithful day 18th October 2019 at the Mampong Tetteh Quarshie Hospital at 6:25 pm. Opanin Ohene Assifo left behind his widow Madam Mary Adobea, six sons, four daughters and 33 grandchildren. Opanin Assifo was humble, just and even free to share the little he had with his neighbours. He was a very compassionate person who helped many people in diverse ways including friends, strangers as well as family members.
