Joy 99.7FM Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah is promising listeners of the biggest breakfast show in town “a lot more fun and a lot more ground-breaking innovations.”
Kojo was in the United States with his producer, Kofi Ansah, for a week-long conference of morning show presenters and producers from around the world.
“It was a platform to share and interact and also to tell the world some of the things we are doing here on the Ghanaian market – its impact – and to teach them as well some of the new and interesting things they can do,” he said.
The man who led Joy FM to pick the prestigious Chartered Institute of Marketing award for Radio Programme of the year 2008, returns with refreshed energy and is all ready to bring the enormous experience he has added to bear on his show.
Asked how the conference has added to his professional competence, Kojo responded: “I would want to believe it's been greatly positive. Again when you meet people from various backgrounds and share ideas and learn, you pick a thing or two; you also teach a thing or two; I will say it has added something to me."
For Kojo, although some of the ideas explored during the conference might not fit in the African context, there are a plethora of other innovative trends that would soon show on the Super Morning Show.
“There are some interesting learnings that we have come back with and we hope that soon our listeners would see something new, something big, something improved on the Super Morning Show,” Kojo said.
Did Kojo miss his seat behind the console? "No!" he exclaimed, explaining it was a break he had always been expecting.
In the absence of Kojo and Kofi, their colleagues Evans Mensah (presenting the show) and Sedem Ofori (producer) fitted the bill perfectly.
Programmes Director of Joy FM, Kofi Owusu, said a 'bench programme' to groom several presenters for the station's many programmes is part of plans to improve its human resource base.
“The company has a deliberate strategy of improving our human resource base and enhancing their capacity. It’s supposed to sharpen their skills, give them exposure to understand the business much better.”
Multimedia has scheduled a long-term training programme for all subsidiaries and departments of the group to ensure its rich workforce is abreast of the latest trends in new media, Mr Owusu added.
Periodically, workers are sent to international media houses such as the BBC and the CNN to have a hands-on experience of technology used elsewhere.
The training programme of Messrs Oppong-Nkrumah and Kofi Ansah comes after a recent one attended by senior journalists Ato Kwamina Dadzie and Israel Laryea, and Adom FM's Afia Pokua in Las Vegas, US, organised by the Radio and TV News Directors Association (RTNDA).
