Lawyers for former Finance Minister, Yaw Osafo Maafo have filed an injunction to prevent him from appearing before the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) with regards to payment of judgment debt to Alfred Agbesi Woyome. Mr Osafo Maafo was scheduled to appear before the state agency, Tuesday to assist in investigations into the controversial judgment debt payment to businessman Alfred Woyome. Mr Osafo Maafo was Education and Sports Minister at the time the contract for the construction of stadia for CAN 2008 was awarded. But his lawyers say Mr Osafo Maafo has concerns with the investigations and has declined to appear before EOCO. Godfred Odame lawyer to Mr Maafo confirmed to Joy News he has filed the injunction at the court to prevent his client from appearing before EOCO. He argued EOCO has no locus to investigate a matter which is in the Auditor General’s report and which will thoroughly be scrutinized by the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament. He described the EOCO investigation as a “charade”, adding the EOCO which is an executive arm cannot proceed to investigate the executive, insisting the legislature, through the Public Accounts Committee must be strengthened to do the job. Godfred Odame also chided the president for making prejudicial comment, swearing, his client will not appear before an investigative body activated to hound functionaries of the erstwhile Kufuor administration. Joy News has also learnt that Education Minister Betty Mould Iddrisu will be appearing before EOCO today. Sources say the local organizing committee chairman for CAN 2008 Dr Kofi Amoah has also been invited to appear before the state agency tomorrow. He is however considering taking similar action that Mr Osafo Maafo has taken. Meanwhile the NDC parliamentary candidate for West Ayawaso Wuogon William Afumani Adjei is leading constituency executives from the West, East and Central Ayawaso constituencies to protest what they describe as the silence of leadership of the party on the Alfred Woyome judgment debt scandal. They presented a petition to the leadership at the party’s headquarters here in Accra.
