Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso and former Deputy Minister of Trade, Dr. Stephen Amoah has raised concerns over the Office of Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) labelling of Ken Ofori-Atta, the former Finance Minister, as a fugitive.
Speaking on the Joy News AM Show, Mr. Amoah described the OSP's actions as “highly problematic,” expressing his confusion over the reasoning behind the declaration.
He said, “For the OSP to declare the former Finance Minister a fugitive is something I simply do not understand, whether or not they have the legal authority to make such a declaration is unclear".
"From my perspective, a fugitive is someone who is attempting to escape custody, and I wonder whether Ofori-Atta is even in custody."
He continued, “As a country, we need to be careful with such declarations. It is crucial that we reflect on the legal processes and ensure that actions are taken with full regard for the law".
"Personally, I am also taking the time to reflect on my own actions and the larger role we all play in such matters," he said.
Mr. Amoah further emphasised that Ghana cannot continue to face recurring incidents of this nature.
“We need to redefine our corporate focus as a nation, we need to introduce a new paradigm shift and make sure that we do not hastily label people as criminals, especially when a competent court with proper jurisdiction has yet to make any ruling on the matter,” he said.
He urged the nation to adopt a more responsible and thoughtful approach moving forward, stressing that the country’s future should be built on careful consideration, fairness, and respect for due process.
