Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticised the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for declaring former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta wanted, describing the move as driven by a bruised ego rather than genuine legal grounds.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, 7th June, Aboagye argued that the OSP’s actions are politically motivated and lack merit.
Ghana’s former Finance Minister was declared wanted by the OSP after failing to meet the June 2 deadline to appear before the office.
The OSP then took the unprecedented step of requesting an INTERPOL Red Notice for Ofori-Atta, escalating the situation after his legal team’s submission of medical documents citing cancer was rejected.
On 5 June, Ofori-Atta was officially listed on INTERPOL’s Red Notice database, described in detail including his physical characteristics and date of birth.
Miracles Aboagye condemned the OSP’s move, suggesting it is more about personal vendettas than justice.
“This declaration seems less about law and more about bruised egos,” he said. “When medical evidence is presented and still disregarded, it raises questions about the intentions behind these actions.”
The aide urged that the focus should be on fair legal procedures rather than sensationalism.
“We must ensure that our institutions uphold the law impartially and respect due process, rather than succumbing to political pressures or personal grievances,” he added, calling for restraint and respect for the former minister’s rights amid the ongoing investigation.
