The arrest of private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu by officers of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has drawn sharp criticism from Kofi Bentil, Vice President of IMANI Africa, who described the action as “a bit lawless.”
Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, December 6, Mr Bentil questioned the procedures followed in the detention of Mr Kpebu, who was taken into custody after visiting the OSP to assist in investigations into corruption allegations he had levelled against Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.
“From the information available, the OSP’s conduct in this case appears to disregard basic procedural norms. It raises serious concerns about the agency’s commitment to lawful practice,” he stated.
He further stressed the need for accountability in the operations of the OSP.
“Institutions tasked with upholding the law must themselves operate within the law. Any deviation risks undermining public trust and the very purpose of anti-corruption efforts,” Mr Bentil added.
The IMANI Africa Vice President also called for an independent review of the circumstances surrounding Kpebu’s arrest.
