The Osu Traditional Council says some of the unnecessary and protracted chieftaincy disputes in the country, especially those concerning lands are caused by some of the officials of the Lands Commission as well as some lawyers "who have specialised in prerogative writs n never ending disputes".
According to the Council, a destooled Osu Mantse, Nii Nortey Owuo III, aka David Nortey Ashong, is being propped up by some Land Commission officials in conjunction with some lawyers as well as important personalities to parade himself as the Osu Mantse, thereby selling lands belonging to the Osu stool.
At a press conference by the Osu Kinkanwe Djaase and the entire elders of the Osu Traditional Council last Thursday, they noted that the ex-Osu Mantse was destooled as far back as August 1986, when, according to them, they were having difficulties in establishing his true lineage to the Osu Owuo We, the family in which the Osu Mantse is picked from.
Documents made available to the media at the programme confirmed that as a result of his destoolment, Nii Nortey Owuo, aka David Nortey Ashong's name was expunged from the National House of Chiefs' Register the same year.
However, since his destoolment, Mr. Ashong has been parading himself as the Osu Mantse and with the support of some Land Commission officials, some lawyers and dignitaries, have been selling Osu Stool Lands, the Council revealed.
"Mr David Nortey Ashong is an ex-Osu Mantse and has no responsibility to the people of Osu.
He is being encouraged by some officials and lawyers to sell Osu Stool Lands, the proceeds of which are shared among the pretender [impostor] and others ... if they continue to encourage the pretender to cheat the good people of Osu, we will have no alternative than to give their names to the investigative authorities to investigate further" the Council cautioned.
The new and legitimate Osu Mantse, Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI, was introduced to members of the media at the conference where the kingmakers of the Osu Traditional Area (Kinkanwe Djaase) namely; Osu Manklalo, the Osu Clottey Wulomo, the Guo Wulomo and other important elders confirmed that all customary rites, practices and usages for his installation had been observed accordingly.
"We the kingmakers of Osu Traditional Area (Kinkanwe Djaase) and elders wish to inform you that we have, as of 4th of May 2007, enstooled Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI AS Osu Manste”, they claimed and noted that his installation was completed by his acceptance in the Osu Clottey Wulomo and his elders adding,, “He is now in charge of the Black Stool”.
The elders present at the programme sworn their strong support for the new Mantse cautioning the general public that anyone who does business with Mr. Ashong in the name of the people of Osu does so at his or her own risk since he is no more recognised in the area as their chief.
"We wish to state clearly that the Osu Kinkanwe Djaase, the Osu Manklalo, the Osu Clottey Wulomo, the Gua Wulomo and the entire elders of the Osu community we solidly behind Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI and wish o advise members of the general public, corporate bodies, government institutions that those who do business with David Nortey Ashong, the pretender, do so at their own risk".
