Over three hundred Ghanaians including journalists stranded at the Oliver Thambo Airport in South Africa risk sleeping in the cold outside the Airport.
Reports we cannot independently confirm suggest security men have been invited by Airport officials to eject the Ghanaians from the departure hall if there is no word from the travel agency, Africa Origin which was contracted to transport over 1,000 people to support the Black Stars in South Africa.
Some of the victims including reporters from the Ghanaian Times, and the Ghana News Agency, say they were kicked out of their hotel Wednesday afternoon and attempts to reach, Samson Deen, Coordinator of the travel agency in South Africa have proved futile.
A victim, Hilda Goka of the Tide Newspaper in interview told Joy News the situation is deplorable.
“We were at one particular hotel and the hotel manager brought us a mail that they should eject us because their contract is done with them," she said.
According to her, they were told to go to the airport to wait, adding, we have not eaten since morning.
Goka said even supporters of the new African champions, Nigeria have left South Africa leaving only Ghanaians at the Airport.
Joy News sources say the Communications Minister, Dr. Omane Boamah who was appointed by the President to coordinate Ghana’s participation in the AFCON 2013 Tournament, is in touch with the travel agency to address the problem.
The Sports Writers Association of Ghana is not happy with the development.
President, Ackah Anthony said they have been in touch with some of the contingent who say the flight to Ghana has been rescheduled to Friday.
He said the journalists have also been moved into a new hotel.
