Ghana School of Law lecturer Moses Foh-Amoaning has challenged Minister-designate of Gender, Children and Social Protection Nana Oye Lithur to publicly state her position on homosexuality. He said that because homosexuality is gradually gaining notoriety in the country, Mrs. Oye Lithur will attract outright disapproval from Ghanaians in saying that she will protect the rights of gays and lesbians. Mr. Foh-Amoaning was reacting to the public criticisms of the human rights advocate’s liberal stance on homosexuality. Nana Oye Lithur faced a barrage of questions over this stance when she appeared before the Appointment Committee in Parliament. The Minister-designate of Gender, Children and Social Protection managed to set the record straight on her position, but it seems that many people, including Members of Parliament on the committee, are not convinced. A number of pressure groups, including ones made up of clergy, have called for her rejection because they believe that when given the nod, she will use her position to promote homosexuality. On Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen Thursday, Mr. Foh-Amoaning said that Nana Oye Lithur’s views on homosexuality put her in a very difficult position. He insisted that there is a 'thin line' between the protection and promotion of gay rights and thus Mrs. Oye Lithur’s pledge to protect the rights of gays and lesbians amounts to a conflict of interest with the government she intends to work for. The renowned lawyer found it intriguing that the position being espoused by Nana Oye Lithur has no correlation with that of Foreign Minister Hannah Tetteh although the women may end up working in the same government. He noted that if this flawed philosophy is tolerated, very soon other social misfits like armed robbers, rapists and criminals will argue that they also have rights that must be protected. The law lecturer believes that homosexuality genetic disorder that can be rectified through spiritual and psychological help and not by protecting the fundamental human rights of gays and lesbians. He added that through deliverance, self-professed gays and lesbians can receive healing that will enable them live normal lives. Foh-Amoaning said Oye Lithur owes it a duty to Ghanaians to make a categorical statement that will lay the matter to rest.
