Passengers on Africa World Airlines flight from Accra to Tamale were left stranded without their luggage after the airline used the luggage compartment to store extra fuel.
Despite assurances from the airline that passenger's luggage would be delivered to them promptly, many were still without their belongings upon reaching Tamale.
According to one passenger, they were informed that the extra fuel needed for a return flight was stored in the luggage compartment and were told to leave their luggage behind with the assurance of delivering it that same day.
“They told me that my luggage would not be able to come because the fuel truck in Tamale is not able to fill fuel for flights that come to Tamale so they will have to pack additional fuel.
"When you ask them if they will bring the luggage to Bolga, they are literally saying they can’t and that you the passenger have to find your own way.”
“I am currently here. I have no toothbrush, sponge or changing clothes. I have absolutely nothing,” another said.
Another passenger, who was on a business trip to Bolgatanga expressed frustration at the lack of communication from Africa World Airlines and not knowing when her luggage would arrive.
“That is not fair and when I asked the lady at the counter who was going to bear the cost, she didn’t know who is going to bear the cost. It should be my cost. You get to Tamale and there is no one to meet you there and at least say something better to you.”
According to a JoyNews correspondent, some passengers received their luggage later in the day.
One passenger, who was unable to receive his luggage on a subsequent flight, explained that he had important documents and materials in his luggage that he could not afford to leave behind.
“I waited. The other flight came and my bags were not there. They are telling me it’s not guaranteed. They can’t assure me if I can get it or not.”
These frustrated passengers are asking the authorities to intervene.
All attempts to reach the African World Airlines have been futile.
