Scores of patients have flocked the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s surgical, urology and neurology Units after they were re-opened today, Monday, March 21, 2016.
The three units were shut down for maintenance two months ago whilst the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which was also re-opened Monday, was closed for refurbishment.
The closure of the facilities led to long queues at the surgical unit. Many patients were jittery about the closure because the were unsure if it will indeed re-open in time.
Joy News checks reveal that surgery for some of the patients who flocked the hospital this morning have been booked for several weeks prior to the Unit's closure for maintenance.
Joy News' Matilda Wemegah visited the hospital and reports that patients are very happy about the development.
They are certain the re-opening of the ICU will enable doctors to attend to them fully and in time to prevent any fatalities.
Wemegah also reports that some patients have already been attended to and the doctors are busily ensuring a majority of the patients are attended to.
Public Relations Manager of the hospital, Mustapha Salifu told Wemegah that management is pleased that the refurbishment works were completed in time.
“We announced that we were going to reopen by the end of this month, but we have been able to open in the third week,” Mustapha said.
He also indicated that some facilities, like beds and lights, have all been changed, and additional consumables provided at the theatres.
In all, Mustapha said the hospital spent “in excess of ¢1 million to get these additional facilities for the ICU.”
