Residents of Duaponko and Kwaman are among communities in the Afigya Kwabre North district of the Ashanti region who have had to battle Buruli Ulcer as a result of challenges in accessing good quality water.
They are therefore excited at the installation of a new mechanised borehole to ease their plight.
The intervention from Pecan Energies Ghana Limited, in collaboration with the Buruli Ulcer Victims Aid (BUVA) Foundation, will supply clean water to over 1,500 inhabitants.

Ghana is the second most endemic country of Buruli Ulcer in the world, affecting more than 5,000 people.
Buruli Ulcer is a neglected tropical disease which thrives in warm, humid environments like those found in the Duaponko community.
Some of the communities in the Afigya Kwabre North District risk drinking and using stagnant streams and pools which are a perfect breeding ground for the bacteria.
Emmanuel Aguma, President and Founder of the Buruli Ulcer Victims Aid (BUVA) Foundation says aquatic inserts identified in some streams in the area expose residents to infection.

He indicated the urgency of the situation, which influenced him to seek assistance from Pecan Energies Ghana Limited.
“Members of this community were in dire need of urgent support interns of water. This stream harbours all kinds of aquatic inserts exposing consumers to infections.
“From our assessment it was serious. Also, we approached Pecan Energies, whose benevolence we have gathered here to provide portable water to Duaponko residents,” he said.

Pecan Energies Ghana Limited sponsored the installation of a borehole and provided 3,500 test kits for yawns and 15,000 antibiotics to help fight the Buruli Ulcer disease.
Edward Aryee, who represented Kadijah Amoah, the CEO of Pecan Energies, says the project forms part of its corporate social responsibility which will create a huge impact on the inhabitants of Duaponko.

“Today does not just mark an act of generosity by Pecan Energies but the realisation of our shared commitment to community, compassion, and responsibility.
"Pecan Energies is honoured to be partners in progress and contributor to a healthier and more vibrant Duaponko.

“Pecan Energies, in line with its commitment to collaborating with Ghanaian communities, is proud to support this worthy cause through the sponsorship of a borehole,” he said.
