A member of the Convention People's Party (CPP), James Kwabena Bomfe, popularly known as Kabila, says he is appalled by government's inability to find a lasting solution to the difficult socio-economic conditions in the country.

According to him, “it is as if we pay people in government not to think” because the living standards of Ghanaians are growing from bad to worst.

Kabila, who was commenting on the directive to banks to charge Value Added Tax (VAT) on non-core services,  said it is a clear indication that government is not thinking outside the box.

Finance Ministry in collaboration with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has introduced the new VAT Act 870, which affects non-core financial services such as data processing, legal, accounting, actuarial, notary and consulting services.

Some customers were alarmed when some banks gave the impression that salaries, savings, deposits, loans and payment with cheques will attract some VAT charges.

But the Finance Ministry maintained that salaries, savings and the others are exempted from the VAT, which is to be implemented from June 1, this year.

This notwithstanding, James Kwabena Bomfe on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Friday, said government appointees especially at the Finance Ministry have refused to think “otherwise why can’t they find innovative ways to raise money and always rely on taxes?”

“How can you tax the already overburdened Ghanaians, who can barely makes ends meets”, he quizzed.

Kabila blamed President John Mahama for appointing mediocre ministers with little or no knowledge about their portfolios.

The CPP man noted that “it is time the president and his cohorts realize that to govern is not about appointing loudmouths to lie in defense of government

Additionally, Kabila noted that  the current state of the economy is an indictment on President Mahama and therefore he must work assiduously to redeem his image and that of his government

“You [Mahama] have made a bad case for the youth, people of the North and post-independence-day born Ghanaians. Do something before you die”, he bemoaned.
