A solemn 40-day observance was held in memory of the late veteran journalist and cultural luminary, Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng, who passed away in London at age 74 following a short battle with cancer.
The event took place at the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Dzorwulu, Accra, where friends, family, colleagues and well-wishers gathered to celebrate his life and legacy. The atmosphere was one of reflection and gratitude, as tributes poured in for a man whose contributions to media, culture and public discourse left an indelible mark.
Dignitaries present included former minister of state Kojo Acquah Yankah.
Nana Gyan-Apenteng was widely respected as a leading voice in Ghanaian journalism and a champion of cultural heritage. Over the decades, he served in a range of influential roles, most notably as an editor and columnist for The Mirror, where his insightful commentary attracted a devoted following.
He also held the esteemed traditional title of Apagyahene of Tafo Eti in the Eastern Region.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Gyan-Apenteng worked in London as Deputy Editor of West Africa magazine, an influential pan-African publication that offered in-depth political and cultural analysis of the continent during a pivotal time. Upon returning to Ghana in the mid-1990s, he joined the Third World Network, where he led the Communications Unit and edited its monthly journal, Africa Agenda.
Throughout his career, he mentored countless journalists, advocated for media freedom and spoke passionately about Africa’s cultural sovereignty.
Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng is remembered not only for his distinguished career, but also for his humility, intellect, and unwavering dedication to Ghana and the African continent.
