The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has clarified that ongoing planned maintenance works are not a return to “dumsor” but are aimed at addressing localised faults on the power distribution network.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, ECG Director of Communications William Boateng said the country is currently experiencing peak power consumption between December and March, placing significant pressure on the system.
He revealed that Accra alone requires over 1,000 megawatts of power, most of which is consumed by the capital, while Kumasi is also experiencing overloads. “The Ministry is actively working to provide additional transformers to ease the pressure on these areas,” he noted.
According to Mr. Boateng, more than 100 transformers supplied by the Ministry have already been installed, with additional units being procured to further relieve overloaded areas.
He apologised to customers affected by outages, explaining that some disruptions are due to localised faults and, in certain cases, poor workmanship on low-voltage lines.
Mr. Boateng assured the public that ECG and the Ministry are aware of the challenges and are working to improve the reliability of the power supply.
“We apologise for the inconvenience, but please note that the planned maintenance work is unrelated to the ongoing power outages, which are due to localised faults,” he added.
