The Kwadaso Circuit Court in Kumasi has slapped a one-month jail term on a 26-year-old unemployed man for attempting to steal a police armoured vehicle at Nkawie in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
Ebenezer Frimpong, a native of Antwi Agyeikrom in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti region who was arrested on April 15, 2026, changed his plea from not guilty to guilty during a court sitting on Tuesday, July 21.
It follows a psychiatric examination by doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital which cleared him as fit for trial.
That report has been pending for months until Tuesday’s sitting.
The court, presided over by His Honour Jephtha Appau, sentenced the accused based on his own plea.
Facts of the case

On April 14, 2026, General Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi, a police driver, was in charge of an armoured police vehicle with registration GP 1131, which was being conveyed to a workshop for servicing.
While en route, the officer reportedly developed a stomach upset and parked the vehicle near the Nkawie market to purchase medication from a nearby pharmacy.
Moments later, the policeman spotted the convict driving the vehicle towards the Nkawie-Abuakwa-Kumasi direction.
An alarm was raised, and with the assistance of the regional MTTD motor riders, the suspect was arrested at Mim, near Abuakwa.
The jail term
Immediately after the report was read in the open court, Frimpong told the court he wanted to change his plea from not guilty to guilty.
This is a man who pleaded not guilty on May 5, 2026, before the same court.
Asked by the presiding judge if he understood the consequences of his actions, he answered in the affirmative.
The trial judge, His Honour Jephthah Appau, explained Frimpong attracted a short jail term because he is a young man, a young offender who did not waste the court’s time.
Police Prosecutor ASP Albert Asagre had earlier prayed the court to deal with the convict accordingly based on the law moments after he changed his plea.
